How to Meditate as a Christian

What Christian Meditation Is — and Isn't

Christian meditation is not the emptying of the mind. It is the filling of the mind with Scripture and the turning of the heart toward God in prayer. Where mindfulness watches the breath, biblical meditation watches the Word: "I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways" (Psalm 119:15, KJV).

The Bible commands meditation more than thirty times. It was Joshua's instruction on the eve of leading Israel (Joshua 1:8). It was David's lifelong delight (Psalm 1:2; Psalm 63:6). The aim is never relaxation alone — though peace often follows — but communion with the living God.
